food, visits, and Insanity

time to catch up on my blog .. let's see, where did i leave off?

ah yes .. WSET Advanced Level III .. the results are in ..
theory - pass with merit
tasting - pass with distinction
overall - pass with merit

argh!  i missed an overall pass with distinction by a hair.  i was actually quite disappointed with myself.  usually i'm better at the theory portion but i've gained a lot of confidence in my blind tasting skills.  less than 50% of the class passed so it wasn't an easy exam.  my mentor was proud of my accomplishment - i went into the WSET program without having to take Level 1 or 2.  i also had to learn the WSET tasting note system which is entirely different from how we took tasting notes at Algonquin.  it really helped that i studied with some of the best sommelier students from my Algonquin days.  the four of us would volunteer to provide tasting notes verbally at every class.  the only way to get better is to participate and not be afraid to get it wrong.  i think that was a contributing factor to our success.  i should be picking up my certificate and pin soon - yes, there is a pin for Level III!

after the exam, i stepped away from wine.  i took a clean break from it and started to focus on my health.  i started hitting the gym again and did some research on food source.  it led me to the world of grass-fed beef and free range pork.  i'm not a vegetarian by any means and i appreciate a good steak .. but i've always wanted to know what the big deal was with grass-fed beef and free range pork.  i contacted dan o'brien of O'Brien Farms in Winchester, Ontario to talk about his cattle.  i drove out to Winchester one afternoon to meet with dan in person.  he had quite the operation and it was so cool to see these beautiful animals up close.  it was so much better than going to a regular farm even though this farm only had cows.  we walked through the pen .. i saw how well the cattle were treated.  the type of cow used for producing their beef is the simmental breed.  they are never injected with hormones, no antibiotics, and no GMO (genetically modified) feed.  they go through intense grazing in the pasture and are rotated on a daily basis.  they are not packed into tight quarters so they get a lot of free space to move around in.  it was kind of funny when they hear our footsteps approaching, they all come stampeding out of the pen.  dan says they think it's a wolf approaching so they are running away.  how cute. :)  at the end of my visit, i was able to purchase some steaks at a very decent discount.  at the time i didn't know it but dan's beef is sold at a premium in high end butcheries and restaurants.  when i made one of the striploins, i was blown away.  i've never had a striploin that was so flavourful and so tender.  there was absolutely no smell when i opened the package and it cooked up nicely on my grill.  i learned a lot from dan and he has become a great resource for excellent beef.  most commercial grade beef is produced from cows that are corn-fed with who knows what to allow cows to get bigger faster.  cattle is usually kept in tight quarters so there is little room for them to move around.  the resulting product is generally bland and if there are any antibiotic or gmo injections, it's in the meat that you are consuming.

after my beef experience, i moved on to the world of free range pork.  most of the pork found in regular supermarkets tends to cook up dry.  i've never been able to cook a decent pork chop because it always ends up dry.  ida vallincourt of Pork of Yore suggested that i go to Brian's Butchery to try their pork.  the pigs at Pork of Yore are free range heritage breeds - they have two different breeds: tamworth and berkshire.  free range means they roam freely in their natural environment and are given a lot of space to lounge around in.  they are fed a natural feed of grass and grains but also no antibiotics or gmo products.  the meat is slightly darker than what you see in supermarkets.  the pork chops i bought, had this rim of fat around the meat.  usually we don't eat the fat because it's not good for you, right?  apparently the fat from the free range pork is good for you because it contains none of that saturated fat (ie bad fat) and boy, was that rim of fat tasty.  the meat had a slight smoky (think bacon) flavour.  the pork chops i had were from a berkshire pig.  i met ida at the farmer's market recently and we had a long discussion about their pigs.  one of these days, i'm going to head to their farm to see the piggies up close.

next up, i will be trying free range chickens and farm fresh eggs.  my source?  beking farms.  they are known for their farm fresh eggs and i'm excited to see how they compare to regular store bought eggs.  apparently there is a difference - not only in taste but in price!  i don't mind paying a premium if it is top quality protein.   hopefully by my next post, i'll have an update.

as i mentioned earlier, i've started hitting the gym and my friend mentioned that he was exercising as well.  he started the Insanity program.  hmm, really?  i borrowed the dvds from him and decided to give it a go myself.  omg, the first few days was brutal but i got used to it fast.  am i seeing results?  well, slowly .. with all exercise programs, diet plays a huge part in the success or failure of the program.  they say that diet is 90% of the program.  it is important to eat right so that the muscles have fuel.  most people think that all they have to do is cardio or weights but when you start to exercise like that, you need to increase your caloric intake with the right foods.  my weight gain was caused by the fact that i cut down my caloric intake when i wasn't hitting the gym as often.  i thought .. since i'm not exercising to burn off these calories, i should just consume less so there is less to burn.  make sense right?  no.  what happened was that by eating less, i put my body into starvation mode.  i drastically reduced my metabolism (bad) and every bit of food was being stored because of this starvation mode.  a trainer scolded me and said no, you have to eat and eat good fats.  you need fat in order to lose weight.  so i started to eat good fats like avocado, raw almonds, and greek yogurt for added protein.  i cut down on rice consumption - very difficult for an Asian person.  when i do have rice, it's 25% jasmine rice and 75% red rice which is better for you.  i also cut down on bread and pasta.  cutting down doesn't mean cutting out.  i still have them, but just not as often as i used to.  pasta is something i have once a week and usually on tuesday/wednesdays because i need carbs for badminton.  one thing i cannot do - brown rice pasta.  ugh!  my sister gave me some and i tried it the other day .. it's the most disgusting thing i've made.  it tasted funny.  i know my sister meant well but it was not good.  i feel sorry for anybody who is on a gluten-free diet.  :)  (side note:  going gluten-free when you don't have celiac disease is not a good thing.  a lot of celebrities swear by it but it's not a good diet for those who don't have an aversion to gluten).

i must say, the workouts have had a positive impact on me.  it used to be tough to drag me out of bed in the morning but after the intense Insanity workouts, i get myself out of bed a lot earlier and without that feeling of dread.  i have more energy and i feel quite good.  that's the important part.

lastly, i made two trips back to Toronto in a span of two weeks.  the first trip back, my brother was in town with his family.  i don't see them that often so any chance i get, i would make the 4 hr drive to spend time with everyone.  with everyone together, it was the right time to go to the cemetery to pay our annual respects to our grandparents.  visiting the cemetery might sound creepy but i make it fun and educational for the kids .. i quizzed my niece Amanda on her math skills by having her determine the age of the deceased.  you could see the wheels turning in her head as she would do the calculations.  i also printed off some sheet music for my oldest niece Amelia - the song was "All of Me" by John Legend.  Amelia hasn't been enthusiastic about piano but i wanted to give her something fun to work towards.  she was excited to have the sheet music for this song that she liked.  she told me that her classmates all knew how to play the song.

two weeks later, i drove back to celebrate Mother's day with my mom.  we had a barbeque at my sister's place and while i was there, Amelia pulled out the sheet music for "All of Me" and played for me.  she wasn't perfect but i was happy to see that in two weeks of secretly practicing, she played very well.  i gave her a second song to learn - "Listen to your heart" by DHT & Kelly Clarkson.  she and Amanda listened to the song and smiled.  it's not from their generation but they both liked the song.  can't wait to hear them play during my next visit.

mother's day was great.  i took mom for breakfast at a local diner.  she loves her bacon and eggs!  :)  i think being able to take her out and chauffeur her around makes her happy.  she doesn't drive and relies on others a lot.  she is never afraid to ask me to drive her anywhere .. i even drove her out to a temple on the west end of the city.  she had been wanting to go to the temple to see the plaque for my grandparents.  when we got to the temple, she said she forgot the plaque number.  sigh .. :)  luckily, she showed me the night before so it was still fresh in my head.  (mom, what would you do without me?? :)  we spent some time checking out the temple, i said my prayers, and we each made a donation.  i wrote my mom's name and my name in the donations book.  i thought it was good mother/daughter time.

anyway, that's a long update .. it's time for some insanity plyometric cardio and P90X ab ripper.  have a great weekend!

October has come and is almost gone.

 Sunday, October 28, 2012

wow .. october came and went pretty quickly, huh?  i honestly can't remember much of what happened in the last 28 days.  all i know is ..

i went home for thanksgiving - last time i was home was back in august so it was a while before i went home for a visit.  my visit home was really good - i got to get out and do stuff with family.  we celebrated my nephew's birthday - he turned 5?  ;)  i'm bad with ages because it's so hard to keep track of 8 nieces and nephews.  i always try to do some baking before heading home so i made cupcakes and oatmeal cookies for everyone.  due to the nut allergies among the children, i was limited in what i could bake so oatmeal cookies was my go-to recipe.  plus, i had all of the ingredients at home.

the next day, i made plans with my sister to hit yorkdale.  i haven't been there in years and it has changed so much.  before the mall, i took my mom out for breakfast.  my mom loves bacon and eggs so we indulged a little bit.  she wasn't up for shopping at first but we convinced her to go with us.

yorkdale was like heaven.  i could swear i heard the angel's singing.  i think i spent the most time at holt renfrew's handbag section.  marc jacobs, balenciaga, prada, burberry .. it was tough to decide what i wanted.  i wanted it all!  :)

we spent about 3 hrs at the mall and did a bit of damage on the credit card.  females at a mall?  dangerous.

i do miss home a lot.  i still flip flop between moving home and staying here.  i have about a year left in my program so i know i'm not moving any time soon.  i think if all goes to plan, i would finish around jan 2014.  the best time to put the house on the market is in april.  the house is pretty well built and the layout is one of the best (imo).  trouble for me is, i have had a difficult time looking for a house that i like in toronto.  even the new homes are just average and super expensive.  sigh .. i dunno .. maybe i'll just move back home with mom and dad.

ok, that's just crazy talk.  hahaha .. i love my parents but i can't live with them after being away from home for so long.

anyway, i'm already making plans for christmas .. i think i'll be in toronto for the annual christmas eve lunch group lunch!  i know it's early but i hope to see as many of my friends as possible.  i think larry, ivy, chris, and damien have already booked some time .. how many days am i going to be available again??

larry:  i want a bottle of your famous rum punch this year!  :)

before i end this post, just something interesting i read today ..

The Four Agreements by Don Miguel

Be impeccable with your word - Speak with integrity. Say only what you mean. Avoid using the word to speak against yourself or to gossip about others. Use the power of your word in the direction of truth and love.

Don't take anything personally -
Nothing others do is because of you. What others say and do is a projection of their own reality, their own dream. When you are immune to the opinions and actions of others, you won't be the victim of endless suffering.

Don't make assumptions - Find the courage to ask questions and to express what you really want. Communicate with others as clearly as you can to avoid misunderstandings, sadness and drama. With just this one agreement, you can completely transform your life.

Always do your best - Your best is going to change from moment to moment, it will be different when you are healthy as opposed to sick. Under any circumstance, simply do your best, and you will avoid self-judgment, self-abuse and regret.

Recovering from the nastiest flu ever ..

 Wednesday, April 18, 2012

it's been a while since i've been this sick.  been battling a nasty flu bug for over a week now and i'm just starting on the road to recovery.

about three weeks ago, i had the chills while sitting at my desk at work.  i spent most of the day working with my coat on while the sun was shining outside.  i know .. huh?  i know how my body reacts when i'm about to get sick, so i took the next day off to get some sleep and try to avoid getting sicker.  i didn't want to get sick before my final exam.  luckily, i got through my finals and was looking forward to a long weekend in Toronto.

i wasn't planning on staying long and it seemed like there was little time for friends - why are my vacation days spent like this?  (that's another post for another day).

Monday rolled around and i knew i wasn't fit to drive.  the whole nine hundred yards hit me .. chills, fever, muscle aches, headaches, joint aches, everything-aches.  i messaged my friends to let them know that i wasn't going to be home yet.  they all wished me well and that luckily i was home so my mom could take care of me.  :)  well .... dr. mom doesn't believe in western medicine.  so i had medicated plasters, white flower oil, and ginger solutions, etc .. all in the name of drawing out the 'toxins'.  after all that pickling, i smelled like an 80 year old woman ..

my condition seemed to get worse and worse by the day.  i lost my appetite for 3 days, constantly felt dizzy, and had sinus headaches that could kill the average bear.  i even missed my class dinner at the Divino Wine Studio.  :(  i was really looking forward to it and had a dress picked out for the occasion.  i also missed out on the Git workshop but i'm sure there will be another.

finally, by friday .. good old big sister, Justine put an end to my misery.  she went out and bought me some cold and flu tablets from the drug store.  :)  popped two of those pills and i never looked back.

so i ended up staying in Toronto for longer than i expected but i was in no shape to see anybody.  :(  i don't know when i'll be back next but the next time .. i'm making sure i see friends ..

oh yeah .. final exam for Grape Varieties.  i went 3 for 3 on the blind tasting!  the written was pretty easy too.

good bye Grape Varieties .. hello Vinification and New World Wine Regions!

Countdown to Easter Weekend

 Monday, April 18, 2011

Only a few more days and I will be home for Easter weekend.  It's been a while since I've been home and I soooo miss everyone - family and friends.  As usual, I'm booked to see a few folks during that weekend.  But I want to spend time with my family as I have not seen them since Chinese New Year.

I spent the day busy baking .. chocolate chip muffins for Amanda and vanilla cupcakes for Amelia, Anson, Aidan, and Chloe.  Hmm .. why did we give Chloe a non-A name??  :)

Because I work in a government town, I get Easter Monday off!  Yay .. extra long weekend for me.

After this visit, my next visit will be in May for a wedding.  If the entire lunch group attends, it will be the first time we all get together in a very long time.  I'm so tempted to bring my camera and shoot but if I'm wearing a dress and heels, it might not be a good idea.  I'll leave that up to the professionals.

Next on my list .. ugh .. I gotta get these winter tires off my car!  It's spring already.

On the last night of my Christmas vacation in Markham

 Sunday, January 2, 2011

On the eve of my Christmas/New Year's holiday in Toronto/Markham, I am sad that my trip has come to an end.  I am leaving for Ottawa tomorrow morning.  I had the best time and a much needed vacation.  This was my first week long vacation of 2010.  As you can see from my Year in Review post, it was a busy year for me and there wasn't much time for vacation.

On Christmas Eve, I came home just in time for family dinner.  It was great to see my parents, my siblings, brother-in-laws, and all of my nieces and nephews.  I missed the Christmas Eve all-you-can-eat sushi lunch but I was there in spirit.  I even called in to say hi to the gang.  I was told that I didn't miss much though - many of their food orders were ignored or fell on deaf ears and in the end, they left with little food in their tummies.  :(  Not good for an AYCE sushi place.

Christmas Day was great.  Justine & Dickens made a turkey dinner with lots of side dishes.  I brought the stuffing and cranberries.  It was everything I expected it to be and more.  I really missed spending Christmas with my family last year and I got my wish this year.

On the days in between, I got to spend time with my parents.  My sister, parents, and I spent a few afternoons playing mahjong.  I could tell my dad really enjoyed it.  When I'm not home, there aren't enough people to play.  So while I was home, we played quite a bit.  It was nice to see that his skills are still sharp.  Sometimes I worry that they are getting old but my parents are still pretty good.  I think laughter helps a lot.

After spending a few days with family, I got to have lunch with my friend Chris L.  Chris was a good friend from university.  He told me about an unfortunate family incident that happened earlier this year and I was quite sad for him.  I hope 2011 is a year of change for him.

I also got a chance to meet up with Larry, Vicky, and CoKa .. but all on different days!  :)  That just means three different nights out.  It was fun hanging out with each and every one of you but next time, we're going for one big lunch together because I won't have that many days to spare.  Haha .. :)

Tonight was hot pot at Joyce & Samuel's house.  They recently bought XBox360 with Kinect and they ordered Dance Central!  Guess who's addicted to that game now?  :)  That's another first for me .. a dance video game?  Me?  I'm usually really shy about participating in video games because I'm such a newbie at it .. but I didn't care tonight.  It was a lot of fun.  Should I get one?  ;)

2010 Year in Review

 Saturday, January 1, 2011

Wow. The year went by so fast! It's that time of year where I recap everything that I have or haven't accomplished this year. Back in April, I had created a to-do list of things that I wanted to do over the summer. It was a long list as is .. and during the fall and early winter, I started adding more to my to-do list.

Let's see ..

To Do #1 - Continue taking yoga on a weekly basis.  - COMPLETED
Instead of taking yoga, I started taking pilates at the gym every Saturday afternoon. I love this class and I know I will continue taking it into the New Year.  I have to look for a class elsewhere because my current instructor is pregnant and so she will no longer be teaching the course at my regular gym.  :(

To Do #2 - Take the Wilton Cake Decorating I course.  - COMPLETED
Course 1 was completed. I enjoyed it and will likely take course 2 & 3 in the New Year.

To Do #3 - Take up tennis again  - Did Not Complete.
Instead of tennis, I continued to play badminton. I have met a few friends who are avid tennis players so that may happen next summer. We'll see.

To Do #4 - Experiment with different recipes - COMPLETED
I manage to cook at home every night and I don't mean instant ramen noodles or tv dinners. Every night, I try to make a starch, a veggie, and a lean protein. I also try to bake every once in a while. Some of my best baked goods - mini cheesecakes. My worst? The pear crisp I blogged about. That was embarrassing! :)

To Do #5 - Catching up with friends. - HALF COMPLETE
Every trip back to Toronto, I have made it a point to meet up with my former co-workers or university friends. If I don't meet up with them, I have made a phone call or two to keep in touch. I still have so many people to reconnect with .. I know what you're thinking .. just move back! :) I'm gonna try .. seriously.

To Do #6 - Badminton - HALF COMPLETE
My secret goal was to be good enough to play in the Mark Grantham team tournament this year. Unfortunately, the tournament will be held on the weekend of Chinese New Year. I will be in Toronto that weekend because CNY is important to my family. However, a friend of mine recently asked if I would play in the University of Ottawa tournament in mid January. So even though I won't get to play in the tournament I was hoping to play in, I got asked to play in another. It's funny how things have worked out. :)  I have to rest my shoulder as there is a bit of tendonitis that needs to be 'fixed' before I can continue to play on a regular basis.  I give this a 'half complete' because the tournament is in 2011.

To Do # 7 - Rediscover my hobby of photography. - COMPLETED
I have always loved photography. And the last few years, I didn't have much time for it. In the fall, I decided to pull out my camera again and start shooting. I almost forgot how much it made me happy. I get to be creative and it challenges me artistically. I've been shooting tournaments as practice.  In 2010, I shot two tournaments.  This is another thing I will keep doing in 2011.

To Do #8 - Take the Christopher Leadership Course - COMPLETED
This was another fall/winter goal of mine. I had heard about this course and I decided to take it in the fall. It was an 11 week commitment about gaining leadership skills through public speaking. This course has helped me on a personal and professional level. I started off shaky and for the first four weeks, I kept wanting to drop out. But I stuck with it and I got better and better. I started to see what the course was about and I saw the change in my attitude, mindset, and outlook. I am very grateful for what I learned in this course.

To Do #9 - Try something different food-wise - COMPLETED
I tried my first shawarma! :) It's Lebanese food and in Ottawa, there are lots of shawarma eateries. The best is at Shawarma Palace. I went there with friends after badminton one evening and the line up was so long! You know that's a good sign. My friends told me I had to try the platter. Wow. The platter was huge. It was a dinner for two. It came with salad, rice, potatoes, pickles, chicken shawarma, and the most garlic-loaded garlic sauce. That garlic stench lingers for days but it's soooo good.

I also ate at St. Hubert for the first time. It's like Swiss Chalet. I can say I've been there, done that. It's not bad but Swiss Chalet fries are better than St. Hubert fries.

To Do #10 - Make health a priority - COMPLETED
Funny how this to-do comes after my blurb on shawarma and St. Hubert. :) My health has been a priority of mine. I hardly eat out now because eating out isn't always the healthiest. By not eating out, I have learned to cook healthier dishes and try new food items. My new favorite food is avocado. I only buy these every once in a while because they are pretty expensive. When I want to treat myself, I buy an avocado. :) I've also committed to going to the gym twice a week. I notice that when I don't go to the gym, my energy level drops. I always feel good when I'm finished with a workout. When I am home for Christmas, I will likely spend some time at the gym.

Whew .. not bad for a whole year, eh? :) I must say, I had fun doing everything.

With 2011 starting soon, I'm already thinking of what should go on my next to-do list. Hmmm .. what adventure should I try next? Snowboarding? Ice skating? P90X?

What is your goal for 2011?

Visiting Toronto

 Wednesday, November 10, 2010

I'm driving to Toronto tomorrow night.  Ahhh .. can't wait to see my friends again.  I'm making a special trip back to collect my reward for being able to name all of the animals from Vicky and Steve's safari trip.  Hahaha ..

Anyway, it's late .. I played so much badminton tonight that I'm exhausted.  And I still have to pack for my trip.  Sigh ... I suck at time management.

Sam & Steph in Ottawa

 Tuesday, April 27, 2010

My brother and his family came to Ottawa this past weekend to visit me.  It was really nice seeing him, Steph, the boys (Hong and Seph), and baby Sienna.  She was so cute with her big brown eyes.  I took them to Parliament Hill, the Rideau Centre, and the ByWard Market.  While at the ByWard Market, we stopped at Le Moulin de Provence for the famous Obama cookies.  Barack Obama had stopped in this bakery for some Canada cookies when he came to Ottawa.  Ever since then, the cookies have been one of their most popular items.

While my brother was in town, we stopped off at IKEA and got me a tv stand for my tv.  He helped me hook up my tv and gave me the HDMI cable from his tv.  Thanks Sam!

I was really happy to see my brother and sister-in-law.  It is very rare that we get to sit down together and really talk.  When we all meet up in Toronto, we all have other obligations - like catching up with our own friends.  That we don't have that much time together.  While they stayed with me, we got to spend a lot of quality time together and I got to know Steph a little bit better.

I am very appreciative that they made the 8 hour journey to Ottawa, just to see how I am doing.  Seeing them leave was sad for me.  Nowadays, I get teary-eyed with every good bye.  When I look at my tv, I am reminded of my brother's visit.

Thanks Sam & Steph.  I hope you guys come back to visit me later this year.

Happy 1 month, Chloe

 Saturday, March 13, 2010

Today is Chloe Chan's one month celebration. I'm so sorry I couldn't be there to see her. Her official one month dinner wil be in a few weeks but I will not be able to make it back to Toronto for the big celebration.

My message to Chloe: I wish you good health and lots of love. I will see you the next time I am back in town. I don't know when that will be but hopefully it will be before you start crawling or walking. :)
